YESSSSSSS!!!!!! That did it!!! My Ubuntu system is sounding off
normally again!! Thanks to everyone who helped!
So the answer is: Master and PCM -- ON! All else -- MUTE!
And in my further digging online, I discovered what I think may be the
key to the "mysterious" sudden sound stopping problems... there is a
"volume control" icon near the clock on the panel. It turns out that if
you right-click it you get access to the "mixer" controls (similar to
the more "primitive" alsamixer, although ironically, not as easy to use,
since you can only see 1 control at a time!).
My theory is that:
easy_access_to_mixer_settings + kids =
mysterious_sound_muting_problems
So I have now removed that "volume control" icon from the panel... (it
was not very useful anyway, since there are keyboard volume and mute
controls that work) hopefully this will head off future sound issues!!!
Again, thanks to everyone who helped out.
