In Pittsburgh it's all high-speed too. Mostly Comcast cable, some Verizon
DSL, and now in both of my parents' areas (north of the city and west of the
city) there's Verizon Fiber. I was shocked when my aunt asked if I needed a
phone line for my computer last week in Colorado, but since she doesn't even
have a computer at home, I guess for her it makes sense not to have anything
but dialup for the occasions when her husband's laptop visits from the
office. If you're referring to rural areas though, there's satellite
broadband available to those who lack cable.
The US has, from what I've heard, very slow internet anyway. It's supposed
to be in general much faster in Asia
