These applications work fine on a LAN, what about the internet?
"terminal services" send a bitmap (well the Citrix app will send a
roughly 75% compressed bit-map) and mouse keyboard interaction involves
a lot of quick callbacks to the "Citrified" application - the Citrix
protocol.  An equivalent question; how well does X remoting work over
the internet.
