The bigger question and answer is: Did Alan get a DHCP assignment
from the router? A look at "ifconfig" will tell him that AND if
he did; the router's address. [Most ARE 192.168.1.1; some may be
192.168.0.1, 10.0.0.1 etc.]
As for the wall phone; if the DSL works with it unfiltered, OK.
If not, disconnect a wire feeding it and see if that alters
anything.
The sole thing connected while on-hook is the ringer; you can always
disconnect one of the wires to it and insulate it.
