[Dclug] Suse Linux

Our organization is aligned primarily with Novell - and therefore SUSE in deploying Linux to the mass of businesses out there. After many years of doing this we have seen substantial improvements that have made things better performing and stable from an enterprise point of view. I have used many distributions of Linux and in each case I had a specific work related or hobby related application I was using the OS for. SUSE still has impressed me as the best of the Windows replacements out there.

I have not personally worked with OpenSUSE 11 since I am more focused on the enterprise distributions, so I asked one of our people who uses it to comment.

She said :

So, for the record, although I recognize that Suse had some seriously pain-in-the-ass package management issues in the 10.x series, right when SLED came out, I think the package management on 11 is outstanding. Clean, easy, love the 1-click install feature. I love the Build Service, which provides incredibly easy, up-to-date packages across a really wide range and helps make sure that software is built in ways that make it friendly across multiple distros.

While I really like some of Ubuntu's ease-of-use, I personally like the extra flexibility of having a more enterprise-oriented distro that still has all of the eye-candy and fun stuff available, at least on the OpenSuse side. Other distros have a lot to offer, and I'm certainly not going to say that Suse is the only way to go for everyone, but as a web developer, graphic designer, editor, business executive, etc., etc. I really think it's the best for me.

Now, ask me about the decision to change the sound management in OpenSuse 11, we may have something to discuss. Some things just need to be disabled. :-)

It has gotten worse and the dependcies now are just unmanageable.

I don't know if Umbunto is better though. I tried it and switched about
to SuSE 11

At this point I'm open to new options. I'm deeply unhappy with all the
ditro's I've seen of late.
