Hi,
I have this situation at work and wanted to know how to start approaching
it. Our office has 2 environments, dev and mgmt. The mgmt uses a dell
powerege 1750(
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/1750_specs.pdf) with
2 RAID drives as their file server. The hard drives have now run out of
space and they wanted me to help them put a new pair in. Right now, its
running Windows 2003 server with raid and everything setup. They also wanted
to see if they can synchronize their contents with a folder on the server.
With all these I thought I will try to put Linux in with rsync for keeping
the folders synchronized.
The thing is that I have never worked with RAID before. If I choose lets
say ubuntu server 8.10, will it automatically detect the raid arrays and
then prompt me accordingly? I also want to transfer the existing data to the
new hard disks. Lets say, I have brought the 2 hard drives, installed ubuntu
and its up and running. Can I connect one of the old hard drives into the
3rd vacant hot plug drive and copy the data ?
Also, I was trying to find hard drives, the 300gb cost like $300, is
there a way I can buy regular IDE drives and use an adapter or something.

I understand that most of the questions show that I am totally ignorant,
which I am, but I am trying to read and learn more about RAID, SCSI, just
couldnt find these answers yet.

Thanks,
Arun
