But I am happy to use this opportunity to point out, to the E-lists
in general as well as to various kind responders:  I have been in
touch with a German Debianer, who is to some extent responsible for
the texlive packages.  I sent him a stub indicating my problem, with
dvips 5.95b, which is what etch has.  He ran my stub against his
dvips 5.96.1, which, as Megan Larko had determined earlier, does not
have this problem, and my German pal confirmed this.  He also pointed
me at his own machine, from which I could grab dvips 5.96.1.  Which
I did, and installed it, and now my cycle   tex --> dvips -->  gv 
works fine and my new dvips now finds the files it should.

I wonder what bug crept into the 5.95b . . .
