Ubuntu by default polls the CD drive every 2 seconds.  This seems excessive.  
It can be limited to once every 16 seconds instead of disabling completely. 
Why 30 seconds is not an option, I am unsure.

I say this having forgotten how the heck I limited it to once every 16 seconds 
6 months ago.  Something in hal.  Though maybe devicekit will make this easier
