Ayup. My little City-on-the-Beltway has a town yahoogroup elist, and
it gets periodic waves about service providers. Seems like it boils
down to all the providers are usually okay, but there's always horror
stories, which seems to be more random "luck of the draw" events
rather than anything avoidable.
One thing that helps is understanding the tech behind a particular
service so one can do some trouble shooting ahead of time, and
then be able to guide the support "experts" along their merry
path. I'm able to do that with Verizon DSL, but would have no
clue about cable or FIOS. With Verizon, the biggest trick seems
to be in phasing my first question correctly.
Personally, I'd like to help build a "MESH" type system where
members had alternate routes available when their main, personal
route goes down. I've come across many local people who would
take advantage of such a system, but don't want to help build
it. Maybe some day...
