Bob,

My suggestion to you is that you should decide first how you want to
spend your time...

Do you want to learn the technology or focus on your writing.

There's no right answer here- just a different approch.

If you're interested in writing primarily, I'm going to suggest you look
into one of the blog hosting providers. You can get a commercial
Wordpress installation from a provider for <$10 a month and then you can
have the blog you want, and also be able to run advertising on it (the
only reason I'm not suggesting Wordpress.com is you're not allowed to
run ads on them).

I say Wordpress but other similarly powerful, similarly easy to use blog
engines exist and by using a provider, you're freeing yourself from the
technical issues of setting up and maintaining a blog, as well as
security patching, etc.

Just be sure you can get your data from them in XML or some other way so
you can move if necessary and you should be okay.

If your intention is primarily to learn, you can install any one of many
blog engines on your own computer, then set it up to host your own blog,
where you'll have total control.
