FWIW, you don't need to be root. I haven't tried it (though I have read the instructions on how to do it), but there's an app called proxoid which allows a non-root user to use your android as a web proxy for your tethered computer. Details @ http://code.google.com/p/proxoid/ Not exactly the same thing as being tethered with full root access so you can use other protocols, but good enough for most purposes if you're in a pinch.

There is an online forum for the Droid here:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/google-android/droid
My wife has the Droid - I have a Cliq from Motorola - also an Android
phone, but it also has the Motoblur that people seem to either love or hate:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/community/google-android/cliq
Most users only have a vague sense of what Blur does for you - having
seen the with and without, I can write it up if people care.
Regarding tethering, generally the providers don't want you doing this.
The bandwidth for data is ultimately limited and the assumption is that
a tethered phone would use a lot more than a non-tethered phone. That
isn't to say that it can't be done - with the iPhone you have to
"jailbreak" it, and with Android phones you need to "root" it (meaning
hack it to gain root access), but it still violates the terms of the
service agreement.
