Jack,
Sorry to here about the laptop. I think that it is possible, but I have
never done it myself. Maybe someone else in the FredLUG has. I've cc'd the
list to see.
Personally, I think that shrinking the Windows Partition is the best way to
go for anyone that really wants to jump into Linux as their main OS but
can't give up some of the applications that run in Windows.
Running from an external USB drive will result in slightly worse performance
since the USB drive is not as fast as the internal hard drive.
