Well, that's maybe still up for debate. But this is what we sorta agreed
upon at our October Saturday meeting:
People would setup private/own CMS systems to try out the different
ones, evaluate and come up with layout suggestions. We should all be
doing what Mark is doing -- I have a 1 year old Drupal here but it's not
really setup to look cool. I will gladly offer access to anyone who's
interested in messing around, learning, playing etc. with it.
The situation is, that TUX that runs tux.org where all the mailing lists
and lug pages are on, is running on quite old hardware. The plan has
been for a while to get the HTTP part migrated OFF the old servers onto
a more modern (2.6 kernel for instance) installation where we can run
the more recent but very stable CMS systems on. The problem is, that
nobody is standing up to get it done. Those who has in the past hasn't
delivered.
So the plan was (and still is) to have someone from Fredlug volunteer.
We can use this excersize to talk about how to "harden" an installation
for security etc; what to include and not include in a server
installation, management tools etc. - a lot of good subjects for many
many meetings to come. Our volunteer would then take the prototype site
the group had agreed upon and simply migrate/copy it to the new box and
it would then go to be hosted and become the www for tux.org and other
groups who are looking for similar solutions. We (fredlug) would be way
ahead of the curve and there may even be guest appearances of
fredluggers at the other MA lug groups to show and tell how to get the
CMS up and running.
So it was a two pronged idea. Unfortunately I don't think we have anyone
(yet) saying he/she would do the HW install. Also, TUX sent out an APB
for the hardware which currently is housed in someones home who hasn't
delivered. I have not heard back yet - but it was my impression that
getting the hardware back wasn't a problem. At the very least the TUX
president has two boxes I set up which was used at FOSE - however
they're short of HDD space and redundancy on HDD so that would have to
be fixed first.
The current www.tux.org box cannot run drupal or anything close to a
modern LAMP based environment. So it has to be a new box.
