Hello! First of all, I can't answer any questions about the
position! That said...

The site is a ten-minute walk from the Rockville Metro Station . The
Linux/UNIX piece is important... you will be the
"primary caregiver" of a bunch of Sun servers and a growing number of
RHEL servers. Don't let lack of professional Solaris experience stop
you from applying. You will need to be very comfortable (and have
demonstrated experience) with some type of *nix, eg RHEL.

Montgomery County Government has an immediate need for an Information
Technology Specialist.
The primary duties include:
• Support Sun UNIX servers and hardware – Administer multiple SUN
Solaris 9 servers, 6320 mass storage unit and a 3310 storage unit,
including backup and recover procedures and testing, script writing to
automate system monitoring, patching of OS and firmware, and
documentation.
• Support Red Hat Linux servers – Help plan, build and execute the
migration of services running on Solaris/Oracle Application Server to
a Linux/JBoss environment. Administer Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
servers running VMware Server. Manager the allocation of physical
resources to virtual guests. Ensure availability of virtual guests.
Administer multiple Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 servers running JBoss
Application Servers 4.x.
• Support Windows servers – Provide support to monitor and maintain
Windows NT, 2K and 2003 specialty servers. Provide administrative
support for Windows file and print services, creating and securing
shared data and personal directories. Create and service accounts and
resources in Active Directory and Outlook.
• Support general hardware and network – Upgrade hardware as
required. Configure appropriate hardware for purchase to meet needs
of core application and requirements of Application team. Configure
and install systems, including software mirroring of drives, security,
mail services, etc. Troubleshoot and resolve network related
problems. Technical documentation on all systems, procedures for
knowledge management.
• Support escalated MAGIC help desk ticketing system & desktop
support – Handle all escalations, Tier 2 & 3 trouble calls, requests
and general IT support duties. Assist and mentor lower level staff in
various knowledge, skills and abilities. Work with internal &
external teams on multiple projects relating to county IT systems
including MCPS.
THIS POSITION WILL BE FILLED AT AN IT SPECIALIST II [GRADE 23] LEVEL
with the possibility of a non-competitive promotion once the candidate
achieves full performance level.
Salary Range: $49,376 (minimum) to $81,782 (maximum)

Minimum Qualification Experience/Licensure/Certification
IT Specialist II [Grade 23]: In addition to holding a bachelor's
degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited
college or university, candidates must possess two (2) years of
experience in the information technology field in areas such as
programming, systems analysis, and data/telecommunications.
IT Specialist III [Grade 26]: In addition to holding a bachelor's
degree in computer science or a related field from an accredited
college or university, candidates must possess three (3) years of
experience in the information technology field in areas such as
programming, systems analysis, and data/telecommunications.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
