"maintenance-free" car batteries are sealed, so leakage ain't a problem.
The kind with caps really don't belong inside a home, so I certainly do
agree with you in not using them.

True, so you would want to use "deep cycle" batteries, such as those used in
photovoltaic (solar cell) sytems.
