Dear Colleagues, I am still stuck. After various modifications, including
changing /etc/network/interfaces as Zach suggested, here is the result
of my call to ifconfig:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:F4:48:21:C4
inet addr:192.168.1.47 Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:907 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:326 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:63880 (62.3 KiB) TX bytes:32935 (32.1 KiB)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xe800
And firefox still gets turned away . . "The connection was refused when
attempting to contact 192.168.1.47 ."
Nick says that 192.168.1.1 is the address of my computer. Is that true
also of 192.168.1.47 ? Why is my computer so schiz?<G> [ BTW, I
can ping 192.168.1.47 and it responds nicely; but it also does so
when the Ethernet cable is pulled from the modem . . . ]
If I run " dhclient eth0 " as Nick suggested, my call to ifconfig returns:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:40:F4:48:21:C4
inet addr:192.168.1.46 Bcast:255.255.255.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:1378 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:536 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:99207 (96.8 KiB) TX bytes:54567 (53.2 KiB)
Interrupt:11 Base address:0xe800
If I read rightly, the inet addr has been decreased by 1.
HOWEVER: it seems that I _can_ get "outside". My Firefox talks
to activatemydsl.verizon.net (any other call reverts to that).
And here I get a screen saying
We're sorry, but we detected you are using an unsupported
operating system.
DSL web-activation currently supports
Windows etc
Mac OS X etc
To proceed with the installation, please upgrade your operating
system or use an alternate computer that meets the minimum
system requirements.
But I seem to be able to ping various things.
Can I infer that as soon as I go to activatemydsl.verizon.net, from
an outside computer(read: the Wheaton Library), that I can activate the
DSL?
Again, many thanks for the help and interest. If/when I get this,
I'll write it all up and post it.
Best wishes,
Alan
