[Ma-linux] DVD/CD Problems

All,
My DVD burner on my desktop seems to be acting up. A few weeks ago I
copied a large number of photographs to a DVD to quickly solve a hard
drive issue. On October 9th I first wrote a large number of files for
my art to a DVD. That came to about 2.2 GB. Over the next few hours
later I tried a backup of the rest of the system. The latter files
appear to be unusable. The time stamp on the DVD is 2.5 hours after the
first DVD.
Attempts to read the Ubuntu disk I used to set up Ubuntu on a laptop are
failing. Part of me is wondering whether this and the backup problems
are somehow software related.
When I stick a DVD into the drive it shows up as a CD-ROM, not a DVD.
That doesn't happen with the laptop.
This desktop is not networked to any other systems.
I am thinking of moving the desktop files to a web host where there is
more than enough space. Then I could wipe the hard drive and install
the system again -- possibly the Ubuntu.
Thoughts?
Best,
Chuck Divine
