You choose an "international" keyboard. Switch keyboard driver back to 
"US" only, and presto you get what you're used to. To the rest of us, 
who writes in non-english languages now and then, we have to deal with 
that behaviour, or get international keyboards where dead-keys and 
single characters are on different keys. But you eventually get used to 
the space hitting ;)

It's not character set related directly. It's simply how your compute 
interprets the keying you're doing.
