   Ok,

Here is my problem (which I've tried googling to find workaround).

I want to see what is on all my old hard drives prior to running DBAN on them.
Thought I would boot a live CD and mount drives and see what they look like
   from a data perspective.

So, I boot PC using Ubuntu 5.0.4 Liv CD, which boots me into user unbuntu with
ID of 1000+. But now I can't su to root, so I can mount drive and see data.

I've tried googling to see how I can get around this, but no luck.

I'm hoping someone can help me overcome this.

   TIA,

I just had to do this to repair a windoze s___box.

I did sudo passwd root and assigned a password to the root account.
Then su worked. I get tired of typing sudo before everything when I
have to do alot of commands. And in the live cd, the root password is
on the ramdisk, so it goes poof when you shut down.
