A year or so ago I bought a PepperPad2 (pepper.com) and have been
relatively happy with it except for a few things (Intel XScale,
MontaVista Linux, 802.11b). pepper recently came out with the
PepperPad3 which I had delivered a few days ago. So far, I've been
very impressed with it. The initial improvements that I like are AMD
Geode, FC4 and 802.11g. The Geode/FC4 combination means that
"standard" binaries/rpms can been installed where that was not
possible on the pp2. I was able to put thunderbird and gaim on it w/o
any trouble. The faster wireless is noticeable and the battery life
is also improved.
pepper also released an SDK to facilitate software development for it
and I've been experimenting with a simple Java app on it to try it
out. I've also been looking for a project to experiment with adding a
new plugin to Eclipse (a popular IDE) and this might be it. On a
recent vacation I wish I had brought the pp2 along because it would
have made uploading pictures from my camera to flickr much more
convenient than borrowing a laptop. I had not expected wifi
availability to be so prevalent there (Paris B&B and rural London) so
I did not take it (lesson learned). In the past, I worked on the
development of a commercial Internet appliance and learned a few
lessons. The pp3 is a definite improvement on those days.
If you have any questions/comments/opinions pass them along.
Doug
