Video games are a complete waste of time.

If you want to promote hand-eye coordination, try sports or music.

As for mental acuity, video games are transient. Games like Pac-Man, 
Invaders, and Missile command are log gone. So will Doom and Half-Life 
someday. Funnel their minds into something timeless, like chess, bridge, 
or other card games.

Worse yet are the societal values that seem to be so prevalent in todays 
games.

Finally, you are playing into the hands of the Commercial Software and 
Copyright monopoly. I find it ironic that a champion of FOSS would allow 
himself to be seduced by the enemy, albeit in a slightly different domain.
