Greg,

Thanks.  I forgot to mention the disk.
It is fine.  I moved it to another machine
so I could access the files on it, with
no problem.

I also tried booting from a bootable
memtest86 floppy, with and without the
hard drive connected, with exactly the
same results I described earlier.
