If your machine is fairly new, the 1024 issue is a non-issue. Modern
machines don't have trouble addressing the space beyond 1024 - I know this
for two machines, including one that is >5 y.o.
Try running Ubuntu from the CD first to see if your hardware and sound
work. it probably will. Be sure to back up any critical data, e.g. on a
second drive, external drive, flash or even GSpace (a "fake" disk on
Gmail; slow). I've seen too many people blow away their Win paritition
inadvertently. While you are at it, you might make a "small" VFat
partition to make files accessible between Win and Linux.
