Think of it as a maturing of the computer industry.
When humans bought furniture in the past, a craftsman built it from scratch
and the final piece was delivered complete.
Now we can still buy that way, but more often than not we're happy buying a
box of parts at Ikea and putting it together ourselves. As long as the
finished product is satisfying to us, the price is what we want to pay, etc.,
Ikea (and others) has effectively moved a considerable amount of the labor
cost of furniture manufacturing to the buyer instead of the seller.
Brilliant!
So if computer manufacturers decide not to provide cdrom discs that 80% of
their customers lose or throw in a drawer and never use anyways, is that bad?
What counts is that the partition for recovery is there and that you CAN make
backup discs if you choose to do so. For me, that's a great idea. It makes
reinstalling Windows easier than looking for discs in storage and only costs
me a few megabytes of a 100+ HD...

I love my HP ZT 3000 :) (3 years old and counting)
