I'd be interested in contributing a talk about linux tools for
teaching and practicing science and engineering. There is a lot
available, not quite straight out of the box, but easy for the taking:

 - calculations and simulations, using numerical and symbolic
general purpose tools like octave, and maxima, as well as
domain specific simulators like spice for electronics, and
finite element packages for thermal and mechanical models

 - electronics CAD: the gEDA suite is developing quite nicely and
includes the graphical ciruit design tied to spice simulation and
   PCB design

 - mechanical design/engineering: qcad and other programs

 - Linux Computer Numerical Control of machining: EMC

 - robotics: support for embedded computer control development on
dominant platforms such as MSP430, AVR and ARM, using GCC and GDB
   cross-development
