Cliff,
Don't know the answer, but perhaps using:
fuser -vm /bad_software_lives_here
might provide a clue if indeed some process is actually using that
nasty subdir. Something in my brain keeps thinking about a mount/
umount problem, but I don't know how to articulate that yet.
