  When all else fails, boot with a standalone CD-Rom like Knoppix (you
*know* nothing is using that directory), and rm -rf the directory. 

  If you're using an ext2 or ext3 filesystem, check the file attributes
(lsattr/chattr) to be sure the directories and files aren't set to  be
undeleteable.
