Isn't that exactly how the development process works? How many Linux 
developers do the work out of pure altruism and how many do it because 
they get personal satisfaction out of it and/or as an answer to their 
own needs? The folks who started this whole thing off did it largely 
because unix functions didn't do exactly what they wanted so they wrote 
their own versions.

You've probably known more developers than I have, but all of them that I 
know do the work because they are having fun and creating something that 
*they* want rather than a project assigned by a manager.
