Why don't you have a "old hardware" party?  I'm really amazed of what I've been hearing in this thread.  I haven't had the same experience.  Maybe you could have an installfest for old hardware with the caveat that you may have to use a different distro than you're used to in order to get it to work.  I have to believe that with everyone there you should be able to get it working on old hardware.

Actually, I wish I could make it to the meetings, but they're a bit far from me.
