Plaintive plea : this thread grew out of my innocent
question as to what people would buy (new!) for a few hundred
bucks, if wanting a laptop to run linux, and specifically roadnav
(which I may have failed to mention).
The idea is to put the laptop on the lap of a passenger,
connected to a GPS on the dash and the cigarette lighter for
power, and have the passenger able to follow along in real time,
on a decent-size display, without having to know straight up
about the machinery.
Roadnav looks (on a PC running straight FC6) like it can
do that fine, at last, at last; but when I tried to put it onto a
G3 iBook running FC6.ppc, I bollixed the whole machine so badly
that I had to pay a shop to reinstall an OS on it.
We got lots of advice -- till I mentioned that I don't do
ebay. Then the whole original thread dried up ...
