I think the problem with most home intercom systems is that
most people just end up yelling to each other, even if they're
three floors apart.  If you looking for the music end of things,
you'll probably be much happier hooking up something to
your existing stereo(s) as most intercoms are a single cheap
speaker.
My parents had a wired intercom in their house.  I think they
finally just covered the holes with drywall.
