Could you draw an ASCII picture of your layout?

And maybe even tell what the DHCP is returning or at least suppose to.

Because if your HOST is on a different subnet from the "default gw
host", then how would it know how to reach the "default gw host" itself?

IOW a HOST on a different subnet from the "default gw" would need some
type of routing information in order to reach to the "default gateway
host" {-: and that would in effect become the default "gw" route entry
for that HOST. :-}.
