Hi Everyone-
Quite a few people got a Release Candidate of Guardian Angel Linux (GAL-2.0RC3.0.3.5b) today. Here are some things to keep in mind:
1) Any problems or questions, contact me at support at silicon-safari.com Understand please that the tech support staff consists of... me. I will get to any problem and issue as soon as I can via email. Hopefully the forums and Wiki will be available for more comprehensive self-help.
2) Please do NOT post the GAL ISO anywhere yet. I will make it available as soon as possible.
3) You can share the ISO. There is, like many Linux distros, encryption within GAL, so it is not to be EXPORTED from the USA.
4) Try it on as many computers as possible... but remember the MINIMUM amount of RAM needed is 512MB. If you are having problems with 512MB configurations, contact me and I can give you a few tweaking parameters to maximize your setup. USB 2.0 is STRONGLY encouraged!!! If you are using a DVD, then a fast (4x min) is STRONGLY recommended. Booting off DVD can be SLOW... but once it is booted it works quite nicely.
5) The minimum setup requires one of the following:
a) CD and USB Flash Drive
b) CD and DVD drive (2 drives)
c) BIOS capable of booting a USB Flash Drive
d) a bootable DVD
e) a Windows system with a Hard Drive (for GAL software to be installed) and a CDRom
f) an Intel Mac with a DVD and USB port.
g) an Intel Mac with a DVD
6) There are a few BASIC questions I foresee people asking:
a) How to make a usb flash drive. Minimum is a 2GB Flash Drive. We will be selling pre-installed USB Flash Drives at our online store soon. To install yourself to a USB Flash drive, use the command "usbkey-creator". BE CAREFUL!! Anytime you use a formatting/partitioning package you can mess up stuff. I have limited the usbkey-creator utility to REMOVABLE USB drives attached to the computer. PLEASE REMOVE ANY EXTERNAL USB DRIVES (unplug them) that you don't wish to be possibly formatted over BEFORE making your GAL bootable Flash Drive. In other words, be VERY PARANOID... data loss SUCKS!
b) wireless/wired network connection. DHCP connections are STRONGLY suggested for simplicity. Wired connections are simple- plug in your computer and boot GAL- everything happens auto-magically. Wireless networking requires the use of the command "wpa_setup". Open a command console and check to see if your wireless card is auto-detected by GAL by typing the command "iwconfig" and look for any interface that has a "Nickname". For example, after doing a iwconfig a wireless interface with Nickname zd1211 shows up. For a network setup that uses WPA encryption with a WAP SSID of "MyNet" and passphrase of "mypassword" and Nickname zd1211, use one of the following commands:
wpa_setup -k
and answer the questions
or
wpa_setup --gui -k
and answer the questions
or
wpa_setup -s MyNet -n zd1211 -e wpa -g -k
and answer the question
wpa_setup -h gives help
Wireless setups are a bit tricky so be patient. If you are worrying about hardware compatibility, I strongly recommend the GAL-Kit we sell... it is fully supported and is a great deal. 9 USB items for $129 + SH/tax etc. I designed it to make setup MUCH simpler.
c) Persistent Saving. I will write up instructions for this.
Ok. Thanks for Beta Testing GAL!!!!
