[Novalug] increasing interface numbers

Happy Sunday everyone,

I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 on an HP dv6500 Pavilion.

Every time the system boot th eth# increases by 1.  I currently have eth21
wlan0 and lo as my interfaces.  My Google-fu seems to be lacking today and I
can't find anything about this oddity and how to fix it (although I suppose
it is one method of determining how many times I've rebooted the system...)
