I just installed Rhythmbox to see it's mt-daap support (aka iTunes
Server). In the process, it installed gstreamer and plugins. After
that, it seems that .wav file sounds are now working in Thunderbird.

I'm not specifically sure if it was a direct result of gstreamer
installation. Has anyone heard of this?

I use fluxbox on Gentoo. So gnome and kde stuff is only installed as
needed to keep bloat down.
