Cliff, look ar the manufacturers website for tools. Some have tools for working on the drive. You may be stuck with Microshafts Windows program, tho... Seagate had some interesting tools for their drives.

  Hi,
I've got some hardware scavenged from tests that I'm putting
together into a Pentium-III based Linux box. One trick is that
I'm going to finally use the Adaptec 1420A that I've been
experimenting with off and on for the past few months.

The two tricky parts seem to be the 1420 controller and that the IDE
hard drive (/dev/hda )was previously used for some IDE RAID testing,
and was partitioned as a RAID, and may have been "damaged" with dd when
I was testing how to recover from a blown disk.

It's screwed up enough that standalone bootable CD-Roms won't boot
this system.

Not SuSE 10.2 install DVD.

Not Fedora Core-6 install DVD.

Not Knoppix 4.0, 3.7 or 3.6.

But Ubuntu Edgy Eft got me to the partition menu. It took
a while, and I almost thought it had hung a couple times, but it
recovered fast enough that I didn't quite hit the reboot switch.

I repartitioned the disk with Ext3 and swap, just to test.

SuSE 10.2 still fails to boot.
Fedora Core6 still fails to boot.

My plan had been to build the system using SuSE or Fedora.
I've been a Redhat/Fedora user since RH 4 or so, and a SuSE
user since 7.3.

But you can't argue with something that works. Edgy Eft
is now installing.
