Depends on the app.  If you're trying to run IE under Linux  
(generally to do web compatibility testing), then you can use Wine  
and the IEs4Linux install script. (http://www.tatanka.com.br/ 
ies4linux/page/Main_Page).  That works fine for IE 5, 5.5, and 6, but  
not 7.  Wine is free, and runs the windows apps alongside Linux  
apps.  I set up Wine to run the Windows Firefox and Shockwave for a  
friend of mine so his daughter could get to a particular site on her  
Ubuntu box.  (There is no Shockwave for Linux, and Flash was not  
sufficient.  Not even Flash 9.)  The integration is such that you may  
not notice it's a Windows app.

Like the various versions of IE, some other apps run great, some  
don't even launch.
