Bad news from my personal experience.  When the XP laptop that my husband uses did that (lost 
wireless and wired networking changing from McAfee to other), we had to reinstall the XP OS and 
bring his files in from backup.  Fortunately he had a recent backup.

If anyone else has had been luck, I am all eyes.
