The wife and I were talking about this last night... and the thing
that stuck out to me was the fact that distances don't matter at all
in many cases. On a daily basis, I'm working and talking with people
spread between the East Coast (Boston to South Carolina), Chicago,
California, and Australia. Sure, timezones can make a few things a
bit odd...

Her thing was similar was more based on community. The knitting
community was relatively disconnected a few years ago and mostly
centered on shops and big events. Since the rise of blogs and the
ability to find each other, their community has really blossomed into
a real community and market... as a result, O'Reilly started Make and
Craft.

My 0.02,
kc
