This is fairly typical, yeah. I've slipped through with loose utility
knife blades before, but heavens forbid I forget about my toothpaste.
Apparently I'm not the only one.

carry-on luggage that also contained a bottle of water... The
screeners at Albany International confiscated the water bottle but
missed the bomb."
(What kills me is flying out of airports where you cannot get water
past the security checkpoint. The screener is right at the gate flying
from Amsterdam Schiphol, and beyond it is no place to buy beverages or
use the toilet, before boarding an 8-hour flight. And they wonder why
people hang around outside the gate and create a big crowd at the last
minute before boarding.)
