Actually, you can get Fedora 7 as a Live CD image for i686 machines.
You can test the Live CD on a system, then install the CD's package set
directly to your hard disk.  Following that, you can change the package
set using the builtin tools to add any additional stuff you want and
discard that which you don't.  It comes in standard (GNOME) and KDE
versions:
