Sorry Jim - you're way off the mark on the first point. Sure, some
e-mail programs save individual files and others save mailboxes as
files, but one of most common mail servers out there, Exchange, uses a
database. Granted Jet is rebadged Access (for all the crapiness that
is Access and Exchange for that matter) but it's still a database: you
can't just copy the files and expect recovery to work.

That said Dan, Jim is right about needing to know your requirements.
Do you want to save for recovery when a CxO deletes something he
considers important? For regulatory compliance? If the latter you'll
need to decide when messages get archived: daily, hourly, as soon as
they arrive on your server? Sometimes that's done by the mail server,
other times by the backup app but for real compliance-worthy archiving
you'll likely need to go the storage level using something like EMC's
Centera or NetApp's SnapLock.

It's all a matter of what you want to do and, more importantly, how
much you have to spend on it.
