I would take the machine apart and make sure that there is not cat/dog hair
in the cooling fins of the processor. Also, inspect the area of the
motherboard where the power adapter plugs in. I would say that the #1 thing
that gets physical damage is the power connector where the power supply
plugs into the motherboard. Sometimes this can be replaced from a
radioshack part or a piece of donor equipment that has a similar connector.
I managed to frankenstein an old cordless phone with an IBM ThinkPad T30 and
end up with a working machine. Some laptops have a charge indicator light
built into the machine (not the LED on the power supply) which might be able
to help you identify this type of issue.
