High mega-pixel digital cameras are pretty common in households now, a photo copy stand and a camera might be an alternative. A tripod can work as well if you don't want to invest in a photo copy stand, cheapest copy stand I saw at Adorama, http://tinyurl.com/365nwt , is $140 without lights
If you want to just try it out, a little materials and labor and following this howto http://tinyurl.com/2z3udw and some lights might work.
This is also kinda cool @ $49

Anyway I haven't tried this, don't scan at all now, but was thinking about it if I ever needed to. I think my tripod would work OK with some lights. It looks like GOCR needs pbm formatted files, so if your camera put out jpegs, you would need to convert the file format.
I wonder if a scanner has more resolution or a newer camera?
Thank you
