Last year I purchased a used Gateway Pentium 3 laptop for $195. It had to
have a memory upgrade to 512 megs and I then added a larger harddrive
because I made it a triple boot machine (FreeDos, Amithlon and Ubuntu).

I could have stayed with the original 40 gig HD had it not been for the
triple boot. I got a cheap wireless pcmcia card for $10. Ubuntu works
great on it, freedos works great, the Amithlon (amiga on top of an
isolinux kernel) is sluggish to load but is otherwise useable. I puchased
it from Computer Renaissance and got it at the low price because I told 
them I did not want windows with it.
