What good would adding a "second" interface do if I can't boot up using just the drive?

But, the answer to your question is, yes I tried this, as the drive was originally in an external
USB enclosure. I removed the drive from the enclosure to see if the enclosure was the problem.

No enclosure -> same problem -> drive bad.

There is currently one drive up on eBay, I've emailed the seller verifying that I would be buying
the exact model listed.
