[Novalug] Gnome on Suse 10.1 hosed

I let my Suse 10.1 box do an auto update, and something really bad
must have gone wrong with the Gnome system files, or the update
process went kablooey in mid-update while I was away from the
machine. When I logged back in, I had no menu bar at the top, which
makes Gnome nearly useless.
So I logged in with FVWM (the only GUI that still worked) and ran
YaST. It said that all the Gnome stuff was still installed, and
needed no update.
I thought I could uninstall Gnome (while in FVWM), and then reinstall
Gnome, all via YaST. So I did the uninstall, and now Gnome wont run
at all (freeze at the splash screen, only recourse is to Ctrl-Alt-
Backsace back to the CLI.) FVWM seems a little weird and incomplete,
but it still works, but is really slow.
I realize that this question is short on tech details, but the
general question is how do I get back to using Gnome again? I am
tempted to just abandon all hope and completely reinstall Suse from
scratch.
Other than the GUI, the machine seems to run fine. Apache, Samba, PHP
and MySQL et al don't appear to be affected.
Any ideas from any of you smart people?
