[Novalug] Ubuntu problems (2)

I tried the suggestion with editing
/etc/network/interfaces

and commented out all but the first entry

rebooted.

still when I click on the icon for network settings it opens with the only
dectected connection being the unused modem connection. that is eth0 and
wlan0 are not presented/found even - as non-working - so I cannot go in
and confgure them.
