This may be a completely unknowledgeable impression but: i already have
the nvidia drivers on my system. i already agreed to their terms. why
con't the upgrade process copy them somewhere on the system and then at
the end of the upgrade re-reference them rather than completely messing
up the reference to them so that I have to go and redo it by hand?

It appears to be Eye Of Gnome - now that i clicked on a picture and viewed
it. On my Amiga once you install an image datatype all the aps that view 
or print images can use the datatype without further modification. SO
being unable to print a png is resolved by everything by installing the 
png datatype. In many ways the Amiga OS has linux like features which
is one reason I am using Linux, but this image handling thing seems to
be different.

Guess I will explore other image viewers and see if I can make them be the
default if I click on an image.
