Things I've tried:

Booting a 2.6 kernel (or any kernel past 2.4.18) fails to see the RAID
and eventually dies because it can't mount the root.

Booting a live CD with 2.6: works, and sees a mess of partitions from
both devices on the RAID. So, it's not seeing the RAID, but this jives
with my experiences. Apparently they decided that devicemapper was the
better way to go, but there isn't a real great way of upgrading the
system without blowing it all away and copying from backup.
